Turning Water Vulnerability into Global Strength: Reflections on Singapore’s Water Innovation Journey

March 9, 2026

Singapore – 09th March 2026 – Hydroleap was recently honoured to be mentioned by Minister Alvin Tan during his address in Parliament on Singapore’s water technology ecosystem. For us, this recognition is both humbling and reflective of something much larger than any single company. It highlights the remarkable journey Singapore has taken in transforming water from a national vulnerability into a platform for global innovation.

For a small island nation with limited natural water resources, water security has always been an existential challenge. Over the past two decades, Singapore has responded to this challenge with foresight and determination, investing heavily in research, technology development, and industry building. Since 2006, the government has invested approximately S$800 million in water technology, helping to grow an ecosystem of around 400 companies that collectively support more than 20,000 jobs.

This sustained effort has enabled Singapore to develop one of the most respected integrated water management systems in the world. Beyond ensuring resilience at home, it has also created a foundation for Singapore-based companies to contribute solutions to global water challenges.

Hydroleap is proud to be part of this ecosystem.

From the beginning, our mission has been to develop innovative electrochemical technologies that help industries treat and reuse water more efficiently. With the support of agencies such as Enterprise Singapore and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, we have been able to strengthen our technology platform, test and validate our systems locally, and bring those solutions to markets overseas.

Today, our technologies are being deployed beyond Singapore, including in Australia and Thailand, supporting industries that are facing growing pressure to use water more responsibly and sustainably. Dr. Moh Sherafatmand, Founder & CEO, Hydroleap, expressed that every challenge in our field can be turned into an opportunity: “Singapore has shown that even a strategic vulnerability like water can become a platform for innovation, collaboration, and global impact.”

Singapore’s water ecosystem has played a critical role in enabling companies like ours to take that step outward. Platforms such as the Singapore International Water Week connect innovators with utilities, partners, and investors from around the world, while government support schemes help companies develop capabilities and scale internationally.

In many ways, Singapore’s experience offers an important lesson. Water challenges are becoming more severe globally, whether due to climate change, industrial growth, or population pressures. Yet with the right combination of policy, innovation, and collaboration, these challenges can become opportunities to build new industries and new technologies.

For Hydroleap, being mentioned in Parliament is a reminder of the responsibility we share as part of this ecosystem. We remain committed to advancing technologies that make water more available, accessible, and affordable, while contributing to Singapore’s growing role as a global hub for water innovation.

As water continues to shape the future of industry and infrastructure worldwide, we look forward to playing our part in bringing Singapore-built solutions to the global stage. Special thanks goes out to PUB and the Singapore Water Association for their continuous and relentless support in our march forward.
